3DS Sheik

Earlier this year an archive of models ripped from Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS was released on the internet. This of course caught my attention for papercraft purposes so today I am releasing my first 3DS model, Sheik.

As an adult in Ocarina of Time, Link receives help from this mysterious member of the Sheikah tribe. Sheik provides information about the state of the world under Ganondorf's rule and teaches Link the numerous warp songs to travel quickly across the land.

Although described as a young man in game, it is later revealed that Sheik is actually Princess Zelda in disguise. This alter-ego of hers has since been used in numerous spin-off titles from Smash Bros. to Hyrule Warriors.

Being a 3DS model it is more complex than the N64 equivalent. So she is not to scale with my other series of models, and stands at 24.5cm tall. Even with the increased level of detail, they modeled the 3DS versions very closely to the originals, so the style is still very angular and suited to be built with the usual score and fold method.

Since it is my first try at these new style of models, this one is slightly experimental. It shouldn't be too hard but there are some delicate bits to build (hair, face) and slotting the 2D strings into the harp is a bit awkward.

It is now possible to get models from this game.

There's some potential here. ;)

Saria

The result of the mini poll was tied, so I ended up going with Saria, who I'd already started building when it was looking like she might win. Don't worry I have PDO files ready for almost all of the characters listed so you can expect to see the others eventually!

Saria is Link's best childhood friend who enjoys playing the ocarina in the Sacred Forest Meadow. Unlike most of the Kokiri she has an air of wisdom and maturity about her and indeed she is later revealed to be the Sage of Forest once Phantom Ganon is defeated. She's also known for teaching Link one of the most catchy tunes in the entire Zelda series!

Now this model has a bit of a history. In February 2010 I was working on her but ran into difficulties because of the size. When I upgraded computers I thought I lost the template, but found her again this year. With improved skills I edited the 3D model into a better form for papercrafting, resulting in the craft you see here. Thank goodness I never released the first version as the editing was pretty shoddy compared to this one.

The size is still an issue, even after enlarging her slightly. Saria is actually a very small character in game (a child after all) so in my scale she is tiny compared to everyone else, at only 16cm. However because of the small size and difficulty, admittedly close to my own limits for size versus detail, I decided to create a bigger 22cm version that you can build instead. Though I'll respect you more if you manage the small one! ;p

Regardless of size, the hands, legs and shorts are quite tricky. Also the side hair strands ought to be built in a certain way to prevent difficulty closing the model, so please check the instructions.

Difficulty: 7.5/10 (16cm)

Poe Collector 2

I've remade the Poe Collector, who was my very first papercraft design though required a lot of improvisation to build. This new version starts from the beginning, with much more extensive editing to make it look better and to improve construction. Arguably it is a bit more difficult due to the specific order of construction and some fiddling around with the inner robes, but it all fits together and ought to need far less manual adjustments/improvisation.

The Poe Collector is a mysterious hooded figure who lives in the ruins of Hyrule Castle Town and pays good money for any Poes that Link brings him, especially for rare specimens. He's a rather strange and unwholesome character, preferring life under Ganondorf's evil reign as it creates ideal conditions for his business!

List of improvements/changes:
  • Hood, cowl and eye geometry now fully shaped, no more hanging eye piece or surface contact gluing
  • Robes shaped into right-angle for ledge sitting
  • Bottom piece added to semi-close the model
  • Ocarina of Time textures and better texturing overall
  • Inner surfaces for arm gluing added
  • Better unfold in general
  • Better scaling compared to the other models though not strictly 100% accurate
  • Optional crate to sit him on
The template is numbered to help with build order. This is important for the hood and body but less so for the limbs which can be built at any time really. All limbs glue via surface contact in the folds of the robes or behind the tunic- apply glue to the upper faces and hold in place until secure. He will need to be weighed down  in his robe trails at the back to perch safely. Measures ~19cm from top to toe depending on how the legs are glued on.

Anju

It's been a while since I've worked on a character model, with holidays, other important matters and this project taking up time instead. But I can't neglect this site, so here's a model of Anju!

Anju makes a minor appearance in Ocarina of Time as the "Cucco Lady" in Kakariko village, but receives much more character development in Majora's Mask where she works in Clock Town's Stock Pot Inn. She has a poor memory for reservations, allowing Link to obtain a room key in a case of mistaken identity. Her main role in the game is as part of the long and detailed Kafei-Anju sidequest in which Link must work over all three days to reunite the couple before the moon crashes.

There have been a few versions of Anju released already I believe, all seeming to have her holding an umbrella! Well mine is much more plain haha with, just her in her standing pose at the Stock Pot Inn's desk.

The model is average difficulty, with some small parts on the hands but fairly straightforwards construction elsewhere. The head and hair should be built and closed in a certain order though, so take a look at the instructions. Of course the PDO file with Pepakura Designer/Viewer is a handy resource too! Scaled to everyone else as usual, standing quite tall at about 22.1cm.

Adult Link Equipment Pack

When I made Red 'Endgame' Link  I realised the advantages of being able to customise your own version. The first step would be to create a set of items all scaled to Link and my other models. Although, it took a lot longer than I thought! (Mostly because working on things like items is such a chore compared to character models). For now the items are limited to those seen on the "Equipment" screen in the menu.

So this pack, which may be updated in future contains:
Biggoron's Sword
Broken Giant's Knife
Hover Boots
Hylian Shield
Iron Boots
Master Sword
Megaton Hammer
Mirror Shield
Silver and Golden Gauntlets

Can these be built without having to build a Link model too?
Of course! Mostly. All the items except for the gauntlets and boots work well on their own if you choose to build them. The boots only represent the metal parts, not the feet, and the gauntlets are just simple bits that ought to be glued to Link's arms.

Will you build other versions of Link in future?
Yes, I plan to re-use my Red Link to make different Links with alternate poses and tunics. Different weapons will be compatible with these. Currently only the Master Sword doesn't really work with Red Link, and the shields only benefit when just put on his back. With different posed Links, hopefully the equipment will be more interchangeable.

Why does the Giant's Knife look identical to Biggoron's Sword?
The actual models wielded in combat seem to be the same. The Giant's Knife was really just included for a laugh, and for completions sake.

Difficulty: Variable but mostly easy. Swords are harder due to their small size and detail.

Red 'Endgame' Link

I wanted to design a model of Link in my own scale, but to make him a bit more unique I decided to make him with some different equipment. Red or Endgame Link as I call this incorporates several late game or obscure items not normally depicted.

So he carries the huge Biggoron's Sword, Silver Gauntlets, Hover Boots, Goron Tunic and Mirror Shield. With these items he will be able to smash through the toughest foes, endure blistering heat, lift boulders and walk in thin air temporarily. Actually as stylish as this configuration is, it's not very practical since he can't defend himself and will be sliding all over the place with those tractionless boots! In fact it's not what you might want to use at the end of the game after all. But y'know let's ignore all that for now!

The model is medium-hard. The legs, arms and most of the items aren't very hard, but there are some small parts and tricky folds and joins around the face, ears and hood. I recommend scoring the lines so it will all fit neatly together.

Note that most of the equipment doesn't have to be attached permanently. You can just rest his feet into the snug Hover Boots, and attach the shield to the sheath using blu-tack/putty or a pin. I'm saying this because it's likely I'll be putting together a pack of scaled interchangeable equipment, and possibly some alternate versions of Link in the future.

Stands ~21.6cm tall, not including the sword.

Rauru

It's been a while since I've done a Zelda character model after being tied up with another more complex non-Zelda craft, so here's the ever wise, serious and slightly mysterious Rauru from Ocarina of Time.

Rauru is the Sage of Light and the first person Link meets after being revealed as the Hero of Time. He explains the events of the last seven years and the effects of Ganondorf's evil reign. Things look bad at first but he starts Link off on his quest to awaken and unite the five other Sages to gain their power to save Hyrule!

This model is easy to medium. The body and arms are large and blocky and should be simple so long as you assemble them in a suitable order. He has no visible legs or hands, which gets rid of a few tricky parts! The head has more detail, and although the parts are moderately big, there's some important folds around the face, moustache and chin which must be done cleanly. Eventually the head glues via surface contact into the inner hood, and the arms attach in the same way underneath the shoulder arches.

Scaled to my other characters as usual and stands ~25cm tall. After some infuriating balance problems with my recent non-Zelda crafts it's a great relief to build something that is completely stable!

Mirror Shield

A quick craft made in one evening, as an experiment for my standard scale of Zelda models. I wanted to see what a few items might look like scaled to my character crafts, so here we have the Mirror Shield from Ocarina of Time.

The Mirror Shield is one of the treasures of the Spirit Temple within the Desert Colossus. Its highly polished surface and magical properties allow Link to reflect, or absorb and re-emit the fire and ice beam attacks of Twinrova. Unsurprisingly it reflects sunlight quite well too, which is handy for some puzzles in the temple! Apart from these special abilities, it functions exactly the same as the Hylian Shield, so whether you equip it after the Spirit Temple is simply a matter of preference! I for one think it looks quite striking with the red Goron Tunic. ;)

As for the papercraft it's about ~10.4cm from top to bottom, very easy and should give no real problems. The Handles are optional- leave them out if you want a plain back to the shield. I've included them because who knows...I may eventually make someone to hold it!

Lake Scientist

Time for an update! I haven't worked on anything Zelda related for a while because I had a bigger non-Zelda project that you can have a look at here.

The elderly Lake Scientist was first seen in Ocarina of Time, working in his laboratory perched on the edges of Lake Hylia. He is a researcher, using the lake's water with other chemical compounds to create potent medicines, such as eyedrops for Biggoron. In Majora's Mask, his alter-ego has set up a lab in Great Bay, and studies the marine organisms and climate. He also owns a carefully controlled water tank perfect for hatching Zora eggs!

In the Manga, he appears in one of the short stories and is referred to as Dr. Mizumi, though technically this is not considered to be canon, so I prefer to call him the Lake Scientist instead (as the Manga is less well known).

For the model itself, the body is quite easy because he doesn't have any legs and just a flat base to his robes. The head is more detailed though, especially around the mouth and eyes, so make sure you score the lines to get a neat shape. At many points in the construction you can use holes in the model to secure tabs from the inside, but finally closing the whole thing might be a bit tricky depending on what order you make it in.

Scaled to my other characters as usual, and stands about 17.7cm tall. Sounds small but remember he is very hunched over and actually has a large head.

Grog

Obscure Zelda NPCs are one of my favourite categories for ripping. Grog is no exception and after some messing about in the last fortnight he's now available in papercraft form!

Grog is an idle and depressed young man who can be found under a tree in Kakariko village at night. He readily shares his views on people and his parents, all of which are "disgusting" to him, and even suggests that Link is too! His father is Mutoh, the boss of the carpenters and from their dialogue, the two don't seem to get along very well. In Majora's Mask, his alter ego looks after the Cuccos in Romani Ranch and sports a new spiky haircut. (Though this model doesn't include that)

Photobucket

He sits on a box at 16.1cm and has an optional bag for a mini diorama feel. Technically in game he has three bags so you can go nuts and print more if you want.

The model is very average in terms of construction, the only hard parts being the hands, which are very thin and flat near the thumbs. Also there are many important valley folds on the body that should be done cleanly.

Difficulty: 6/10

The tension of the paper at the joints means his pose could vary and be more 'open' than what you see in Pepakura. That said, I still recommend you use thin card/thick paper, otherwise he might be a saggy mess (even more so!).

Stalchild

Another semi-simple model, this time it's a Stalchild! These undead skeletons rise as pairs out of the ground at night in Hyrule field to attack those who wander off the main paths. However they are quite slow and easy to outrun and will vanish at sunrise. In Ocarina of Time, they only appear in Link's childhood, which is odd considering the initially corrupted state of Hyrule when Link emerges as an adult. In Majora's Mask they appear, but as the footsoldiers of Ikana awaiting orders from Captain Keeta.

Photobucket

Like the Poe, the original state of this model could not be built as a papercraft. There is an unedited version on the internet but I didn't believe it could be a good model at all. So I've merged, chopped, added and re-posed various parts to get this. Unlike the Poe, this is scaled to my other guys, and stands ~18.7cm but will depend a lot on your build. He may need weighing down inside the feet with something to stand.

It relies a lot on glueing surfaces of pieces together, so I recommend a strong liquid glue. Any will do, just don't use glue sticks! Also a few 2D parts are quite shaky so thicker paper is a must. If you use printer paper, you might get a saggy, gibbering wreck. The way the legs and arms glue on, might mean people's poses will vary. It can be customised I guess, but try to get a position where he stands up! ;p

Just glue well, and wait for it to dry and actually this is pretty easy.

Poe

A model that's been in the works for a few weeks, it's an N64 Poe! These Zelda equivalents of ghosts are found in the darker corners of Hyrule and Termina. Each carries a lantern that when defeated, smashes and allows the Poe's spirit to be captured in a bottle. Drinking it will produce variable effects on your health so you'd better be feeling lucky! There are many varieties of Poes to be found such as the Composer Brothers or the four Poe Sisters, but this one's just an ordinary spirit that would only net you a handful of Rupees from the Poe Collector.

Photobucket

This was very 'raw' when ripped and required many edits to make it buildable. It's mostly large pieces but with a few smaller ones on the arms and face that bump the difficulty up slightly. I haven't scaled this one to the others because it would just be too big! In game they almost match adult Link in size! So this is reduced a bit but still looks nice amongst my standard scaled models.

Young Malon

Finally, I started this project in February but it got delayed for ages for some reason, plus it always take me a while to pluck up courage to announce a model of a more important character! I've brought the project forward due to me shortly going away on a long field trip. D:

Malon is the daughter of Lon Lon Ranch's owner, Talon. As a child she plays amongst the horses in the enclosure, and also accompanies her dad when he delivers milk to Hyrule Castle. It's here where she first met Link, and would later teach him Epona's song- an invaluable ability seven years later! She makes a good counterpart to the adult Malon model, or you could call them Cremia and Romani- their alter egos in Majora's Mask!

Photobucket

The model is just over 15cm tall and keeps to my 3400 standard scale in Pepakura. So she'll be the correct size compared to my Zora, Master Sword (13.7cm one) and Adult Malon.

Download Here!

Difficulty: 6/10 but quite easier with experience.

Simpler than the adult version - the dress for example is just a bunch of strips and the head is actually larger! However smaller pieces in the arms/hands, shoulder geometry and closing the head stop it from being overly easy.

Master Sword in Pedestal

[Attention, this template is more difficult than it looks due to small parts and some tricky placement. Your best best is to score all lines and consult the PDO where required]

[Addendum: If you want to build this model but are finding it difficult or the instructions inadequate, I suggest looking at the Master Sword included in my Adult Link Equipment Pack. It is a bit easier and still of equivalent size to the small version of this template]

The Master Sword is perhaps Link's most important weapon in his various quests to save Hyrule. In it's Ocarina of Time incarnation, the sword rests in a pedestal inside the Temple of Time, where only a true hero has the ability to remove and wield it. Link uses it as his primary adult weapon and also by placing the sword back in the pedestal, can travel back in time seven years to re-visit (or pre-visit!) areas as a child.

Photobucket

Download Here! (Updated Mediafire link)

I've made two templates, one a hard 13.7cm tall version which matches my standard Zelda scale, and an easier 16.5cm version for those who don't fancy messing around with some small parts.

The sword can indeed be removed and is a full model, though I don't recommend you keep doing it repeatedly as you might damage it.

It's not as easy as it looks and requires some patience with small pieces and accuracy when assembling the internal sheath- otherwise you'll have a wobbly sword that doesn't stand up straight. Hardly the blade of Evil's Bane!

Difficulty:
13.7cm - 5-7/10 depending on experience with small parts, not very beginner friendly!
16.5cm - 5/10 (not personally built but I can only assume it is easier because of the size!)

Malon (v3)

My first human shaped model since the Zora! And a nice Christmas present for you all too! And finally I've updated it to fix some minor but annoying errors.

Malon is the daughter of Talon of Lon Lon Ranch in Ocarina of Time, and teaches Link Epona's song when they are young. She is one of my favourite characters, despite only having a few small but major parts in the game.

This is the adult version of her ripped from Ocarina and stands about 20cm high. I made a poor version of her a while ago, but this is a vast improvement! Well actually I ripped Cremia from Majora's Mask who looks exactly the same. Except she isn't. Malon and Cremia have slightly different textures and geometry! Malon has a longer nose and neck, while Cremia is thinner, has a small pointy nose and different mouth and skirt textures. Well I think Malon looks better overall despite being slightly less detailed so here she is! But really, this model could be regarded as either!

The model difficulty depends on your experience. Beginners will find it hard, experienced builders will probably not. If you can build my Zora well then it should be no problem. The only tricky part is the hair...

Dead Hand

Aggh! It's the Dead Hand, a mini boss seen in the spooky Bottom of the Well and Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time. A surpisingly detailed and fun model to build. It is probably to scale with the Dekus but will be small compared to my standard human scale.

The monster is a fleshy undead mass which lives underground. Several arms on the end of long stalks project out of the ground in a circle to grab victims, after which the Dead Hand will rise up and attack with its huge mouth and teeth.

The model comes as two parts by default: The monster itself, and a single arm stalk and stand. However you can build more than one stalks for a diorama feel, or none at all if you wish.

Photobucket

Dowload Here!

The Dead Hand itself is not too hard and I believe I got the template for the head quite good. The only tricky part, as with all 3D models is sealing off the whole thing. The elbows may be a little imprecise depending on your build and you might not get the true pose that the PDO shows. My build isn't posed right but still looks good.

The arm stalk's fingers are difficult, because of the small size, but there's nothing I can do about that. ;)

Difficulty: Dead Hand: 6/10
Arm Stalk: 7/10, but only because of the small fingers. The rest is a very easy 2/10.

Mad Scrub (Showcase)

Edit: This was a bad template so I've removed the download for now. If you've found it elsewhere on the internet then build at your own risk.

Mad Scrubs are aggressive Deku Scrubs that attack any intruders to their territory fiercly. Despite their temper, they are quite weak and will flee their Deku Flower when struck.

Photobucket

It made a cute model no doubt, but was beyond my skill to edit well at the time hence I made a bad job of it. So I'll leave it as a showcase of addtional work but that's all. From the photo it looks good, however the template was full of bizarre folds and tiny pieces- the legs presented a lot of trouble.

7 December 2008

Gossip Stone

Boing!! Here is a really easy model guaranteed to give you minimal grief, as well as being a cute little thing at only ~5.5cm tall!

Gossip Stones are strange objects found throughout Hyrule and Termina. It is believed they gather rumours and information to spread amongst themselves but will not easily tell their secrets to strangers. And even if they do, what they say might not always be useful!

The stones are excellent timekeepers and react very strangely if struck with a weapon or magic.

Photobucket

Download Here! (updated link)

Drummyralf and I have noticed that different people's printers might make the template too dark or funny coloured, so feel free to edit it if the default version does not come out right!

The model is very easy. In fact the only slightly hard part is sticking the base cleanly on as it depends on how tight/loose you built the main piece.

N64 Zora (v2)

It's late night blogpost time! So before I go to bed, here is a Zora model from Majora's Mask, though the same version also exists in the earlier Ocarina of Time.

Photobucket
The Zora's are an aquatic race in Hyrule and Termina. They are often found living near bodies of water such as Zora's River and the Great Bay. Hyrulean Zoras have strong ties with the royal family and guard the land's water supply at Zora's Fountain. In Termina, they live as fishermen and are famous for their rock band, the Indigo-Gos.

Download Here!

The model is better designed than the Poe Collector but has a few tricky parts. You have to squash the upper arm insides a bit to get them to fit in the shoulder properly, and attaching the legs is a little difficult. The model is unstable when the fins are added so you must weigh the feet down if you want it to stand!

It stands 22.5cm tall and looks great with any Zelda collection, especially if you take the time to double side the fins!

I've recently edited it to make it easier to build and with full instructions!

Difficulty: 6.5/10
